October 20, 2020

As we dive further into our virtual school year, Egale is proud to share our upcoming webinar; GSA 101: Tools for Tough Times, taking place Thursday, October 22 at 7:30 PM ET / 4:30 PM PT!

GSA 101: Tools for Tough Times invites those who are already part of a GSA or are looking to start an online GSA. These have been difficult times for schools; and GSAs are a great place for LGBTQI2S students to find support, resources, leadership, and to connect with one another virtually. This webinar includes tips and tools for building your GSA, operating virtually, activity ideas, and an open Q&A discussion with our team! Register at the link attached here for this exciting discussion, so you can receive these Egale Safer School resources for you and your GSA.

As a follow-up to GSA 101: Tools for Tough Times, we will also be hosting a second webinar geared towards GSA-affiliated school staff and educators on November 19, 2020.

Highlight: Back to School for Egale’s Day Treatment Program for LGBTQI2S Youth

In partnership with the Toronto District School Board, Egale operates a small classroom for LGBTQI2S youth who are seeking mental health support in addition to education.

The new school year began on September 17, and like in many regions, re-entering the classroom looked very different. To ensure the safety of our space for the eight students, teacher and counsellor, new COVID-19 protocols have been put in place including individual workspaces, temperature checks and mandatory masks.

To help students cope with the taxing effects of COVID-19, we provided virtual counselling to all enrolled and waitlist students throughout the summer of 2020. This not only helped them to cope with the realities of the pandemic in their lives, but also helped prepare them to be more successful in their 2020/21 school year.  Daily group therapy for our full classroom continues 5 days per week, in addition to weekly one-on-one sessions, and case management check-ins for support with housing, access to income and other resources. New this year, all students are also taking a leadership course, in addition to their regular curriculum.

We are very proud of the incredible personal work and progress by the students so far this school year. This program would not be possible without the support from La Fondation Emmanuelle Gattuso, Cadillac Fairview and an anonymous donor to whom we are extremely grateful.

In Case You Missed It: Egale's Coming Out Loud

This past October 11 marked National Coming Out Day, and we showcased three brave individuals who were ready to come out in a very bold way in our Coming Out Loud campaign. Through their stories, we looked not only to celebrate those that decide to come out, but to signal to the community that Egale is here to support those who need it, and to raise awareness around the difficulties of coming out.

Coming out to your loved ones isn’t a one-size-fits-all process; and choosing to remain in the closet for one’s safety does not make someone any less valid in the LGBTQI2S community. Everyone has a unique experience and set of circumstances that determine how they live as their authentic self.
